If you are near a hospital between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., including on weekends and holidays, you will see the day shift staff leave and the night shift employees arrive. It is a scene that plays out in more than 130 health systems and hospitals across our state.

Health system employees like Corey Webb, who works as a CT Tech II at CarolinaEast Health System, will tell you that they love what they do, providing hope and healing support to every patient they serve. Watch the video below to hear Corey's story.

This compassionate care by our healthcare teams added up to a total of 16 million patient encounters in North Carolina's hospitals and health systems in 2022. This includes about 1.1 million inpatient discharges, 4.5 million emergency department encounters and millions of outpatient service visits, including ambulatory surgical procedures and imaging procedures like mammograms. They also helped deliver more than 120,000 babies, slightly more than the population of Wilmington.

And this care is provided with safety and quality at the forefront. North Carolina hospitals consistently receive high marks for safe, high-quality care — ranking 3rd in the nation by the Leapfrog Group in fall 2023, with 47.7% of hospitals in the state receiving an “A” grade for safety.

For working families, finding time for health care can be a challenge. In Statesville, Iredell Health System recently opened a new urgent care facility with extended hours. It takes some strain off nearby emergency departments and encourages patients to use urgent care facilities for non-emergency needs.
